The Courage To Be Who You Really Are & What Is This Blog All About l SMart Choice Lifestyle

The shorter version is that SMart Choice Lifestyle was created with the thought of supporting a brain healthy lifestyle with MS, whilst sharing my experiences of living with the condition and all that I do in between. It then transformed into a general MS platform for the Romanian MSers, but that didn’t continue much, as I didn’t think of myself as experimented as to deal with people’s lives and health.

I’m the type of person that if I am not well prepared to do something, I prefer to not do it until I can really do something worth while. So a few months passed, SMart once more became a personal platform, with an intent to inform and give advice on all types of MS-related issues, such as symptoms, diet and lifestyle. It went on as a tri-weekly blog that had predetermined / themed days that I never stopped brainstorming subjects for (exhausting and frustrating to say the least!).

Here I was, with a lot of personal experience to write about, heartfelt and caring topics to approach, and I focused only on giving the “correct information”, the “researched information”. Don’t get me wrong though. I am always documenting and doing my research from multiple sources before I even dare to trust or believe a piece of information, but this process I was going through was so sterile that I could not put up with it no longer.

So I went on vacation for the winter holidays. Three weeks of vacation that is! Time in which I promised myself I wouldn’t stress so much about the blog as I previously did. Was it successful? Of course not! I had on and off ideas, checked my analytics and drafted new articles from fresh topics.

I began 2016 with the same structure in mind, but finally realised that it didn’t do me (or you) any justice. The MS community and myself needed an authentic voice, not a shared-info-in-my-own-view kind of blog. It sounded more fair to me that way. So I went back to the drawing board and came up with the shapes that best represent who I am and what I stand for.

SMart Choice Lifestyle is my online home. A place where I can invite you all to start a conversation about many topics, whilst raising awareness about MS in the process.

Multiple sclerosis currently affects more than 2.5 milion people worldwide. Although it is a recognized serious illness, many people don’t know much about it and how it affects people’s lives and society’s wellbeing as a whole. I must admit that before receiving my diagnosis I was one of those people. I thought the term “sclerosis” meant you were old and unfortunately senile. Boy, was I in for a surprise!

For the past year and a half browsing through the online MS community, I’ve met so many inspiring and strong people who live with MS on a daily basis. These people always have a kind word to say, in spite of their situation. In 2016, I’m looking forward to meet and learn even more from others living with MS and to dedicate most of my time to share from my experience, to try and help each one of them as best as I can.

Since I’ve discovered the online MS community I have felt less alone. I have felt so inspired by the advice and support that I have received in the past. I only hope that I can offer back the same kind of help to fellow MSers who need it a much as I did when starting this chronic journey.

I find it very easy to talk about my illness, so feel free to open a conversation if you want to know more about it. Ask questions and I’ll be happy to answer them for you. MS is nothing to be ashamed or feel vulnerable about. It’s just a disease that happened to me, the person you have already known for years, or that you are just getting to know via this blog.

To be totally honest, it does change the rules of the game a bit. It has made me less tolerant to wasting time on useless, stressful things and conversations, fights or things that are going nowhere. It has made me understand that I’m not that special (as many of us tend to think about ourselves at some point). MS hits randomly and without a known cause. Once it hits, there is no known cure, you have to live with it for the rest of your life.

Who am I to complain about my fate when there are people who deal with even worse situations in their fight with MS? From another point of view, it has helped me become humble, see the greater picture and how we all have a predetermined place in the world.

Everything that happens, every person that we meet and everything we go through is meant to teach us a lesson. Open your eyes. See the lesson behind every aspect of life. You’ll be as surprised as I was to see all that you need to learn!

MS has made me stronger. It has made me realise that we all have a defined purpose in life and that we must do the smart choice (pun intended) and go for the gold! Go do that very thing that scares us the most, but in which we find the most satisfaction and happiness.

This blog is also a platform where I can share my passion for the visual arts, for understanding the intricate web of the human mind and spirituality, whilst writing short stories and essays on various other topics. It is a place where I can let you know how am I doing at yoga practice and what have I learned about neuropsychology and health.

Expect to read posts on all things healthy living, having a balanced lifestyle, yoga struggles and tips and tricks, the belief in the higher power of God, meditation, mindfulness and prayer, soothing the mind, books, stories and writers, photography, movies and music, with an occasional travel diary from wherever my life will bring me to.

Also, be prepared for articles about human psychology, the anatomy of the nervous system, neurology, people’s social behaviour and emotions and how does that all link to living with a chronic illness like MS.

If you got here and didn’t get tired reading all this, if you’re looking forward to being witness and a part of my journey, you might as well sign up to my email list, to be sure you’ll get the three main articles I publish every week, plus an occasional fourth or fifth post when I have something new to share!

Thank you for taking the time to be here!

Until next time, make the SMart Choices for your lifestyle ;)

Love,
Alexandra

P.S. To all my fellow MSers out there: SMILE! It hugs your soul! :)

The Fear of Being Judged and How Can That Mess With Your Online Content

So I’ve been blogging for quite some time now and my inner perfectionist hasn’t been pleased with the results. Each week, I almost forced myself to find new and relevant subjects to write about, making myself forget why I even started SMart Choice in the first place. That alone can get one feel frustration, anxiety and lack of accomplishments.

And then it dawned on me! I was doing it all wrong! A personal blog shouldn’t be built upon what others expect you to write or on what topics you think people might be interested in! Of course you want to put out your best content and make people either feel better about themselves or help their day in one way or another. Of course you want to put out informative and entertaining content that they ask for and/or need at some point.

The part that almost got out of hand is that where I ended up with general subject posts, when all that I wanted to do in the first place is to write from my own point of view, and thus be able to share my story with like-minded people who might be facing the same situations.

But the mind is equally powerful in two ways: it can make or it can brake your ideas. I’ve written before about why I started a platform talking about my MS story and related topics, but the core-reason slipped away.

I remember how alone I used to feel after receiving my diagnosis and all the frustration towards not knowing no one my age that dealed with the same issues. I searched high and low on the internet, stayed away from all the “classic” horror stories one might find and decided to have a place where I can shine a light over this disease and offer a kind word to anyone who might be in the same situation I was.

I had so many things to say, so many stories to share and so much love and encouragement to give, that I focused to much on doing things by the book and ended up leaving myself somewhere along the road, silenced by my own blog. Imagine that! The irony!

I created a fixed structure that aimed to inform, give health tips and lifestyle articles on a weekly basis, touching some of the “hot topics” in the life of an MSer. Things like fatigue, work and changes have been recurrent topics on SMart Choice, and each generated a fair amount of engagement on Twitter and Instagram.

But where did I fit in? I gasped for air as I searched for the authenticity in the story I wanted to tell. I have been totally honest in all of my articles, but something was missing. That something that sparked in an article here and there and then went off in silence.

We all have the fear of being judged and being labeled, even much so when you have a chronic illness that not many people know about. But now I know better! I thought about all the lovely and brave people I’ve got to know over the last year, and that gave me back the courage to speak my own voice. So many MSers out there came into their own and I feel like it’s time for me to do that too.

After all, I am not defined by my illness, but by my power to live life to the fullest, by the things that I am good at and by the kindness I am so wanting to put out in the world. Long story short, I want to rebuild SMart Choice Lifestyle and shape it around the life and the stories I can give to the world. Make it about the point of view that I can add to so many others that are online.

Expect books, short story writing, visual storytelling, yoga, psychology, brain health and more. All that lived on top of what we MSers call “the snowflake disease”, and that others might know as multiple sclerosis.

It feels so good to take that out of my chest! Especially after the massive anxiety attack I had last night. It came out of nowhere and lifted all my senses into flaming fear. But that’s a whole other article. Soon to come!

Sorry if for some of you it might sound a little overdramatic, that’s how my writing tends to be. It’s missing all the voice, gestures and tonallity that you would have when hearing me talk about the same stuff in real life. Curious about any aspect I talk about? Just ask and I’ll be happy to give you an answer as soon as I can.

Lots of love,
Alexandra

How To Relax And Take It Easy Even With A Busy Day - #LifestyleFriday

Take a moment to analyze your body. As you’re reading this, do your shoulders feel tight? Do you clench your jaw waiting for the next thing to do after you finish it? Is your MS giving you a hard time when you are stressed? Are you getting intrigued where am I going with this? Read on. It’s worth it. I promise!

How you begin your morning sets up the tone for the entire day. If you wake up late and are in a constant rush as not to be late for work or to a certain appointment, you are going to continue feeling tense and stressed as you go along with your schedule.
Imagine easing into your day by having a relaxing, slow start. Imagine taking time to have breakfast and coffee while you check your to-do list and plan for the day ahead. There’s no reason to rush, as things happen with or without you being present.
Don’t stress about getting a certain task done ASP (even if you have a tight dealine). Just focus on one task at a time, and on doing it right. Find your breath and relax all those tight spots on your body. They bring even more stress along.
Do what your body and day allow you to do, as long as you align your actions with your written schedule. After a while, it will become second nature. It is true what they say, worrying never solved a problem, but worrying too much gave birth to headache, palpitations and anxiety.
Get up 30 minutes or an hour earlier. Take time in doing your morning routine. If you are on MS treatment, relax into it and breathe. Drink your coffee or tea. Dress up and plan your day ahead. Focus on the tasks at hand and prioritize.
You have it in you to make this day the best day yet. Let go of what other people might say or think about you. I know it’s hard. We constantly rely on other people’s opinions to have feedback for our actions. But we all live a different life and define our own reality.
What might seem worthless, stupid or a mistake for you, for others it may seem normal and even worthy of appreciation. Don’t be so hard on yourself. You are what you are and cannot change that in a split second or in 24 hours. It takes time, effort and actions taken to achieve a goal.
So, relax, take it easy!
Question of the day: What stress management choices do you usually make on a daily basis? Tell me all about it in the comments below.

NOVEMBER 2015 Favorites & Inspirational Findings - #LifestyleFriday

At the beginning of each month, I count the blessings and misfortunes of the previous one. Welcome to #LifestyleFriday November Favorites & Inspirational Findings  Edition!

MONTHLY FAVORITES

Salmon is still my favourite food! Especially when I find new ways to cook and enjoy it. This month I made it into medium sized fishballs, and served it next to vegetable rice. Delicious!

Since I began my yoga practice, inversions have been one of my favourite poses. Prasarita Padottanasana, or Wide Legged Forward Fold, is a mild inversion, that calms the nervous system, calms anxiety and stretches the back legs among many other benefits.

It has helped me unwind and let go of steam whenever I felt like I needed to cool off. You might think that is not a big deal to fold forward like this, but you’ll be surprised at how much your feet and legs have to work to execute it correctly (and safely!).

Here’s how Yoga Journal teaches it, and this is how Adriene taught me. Choose your favourite. They are equally useful, but my money’s been on Mrs. Mishler for more than a year now! Hehe!

Relaxation has been the best so far this month. I have been meditating twice a day for 10 minutes each, since May this year and let me tell you: VISUALISATION RULES! If you are a visual person like me, you’ll totally resonate with putting your mind at ease in your very own zen garden.

Focus on the breath and immerse yourself into plush white clouds, green meadows with calm lakes, big trees with lots of shade and scream on top of a mountain! Let the mind be calm. Let the mind unwind! You need it!

INSPIRATIONAL FINDINGS

This November, Mr. Dale Carnegie caught my attention with his world-renowned “How to Win Friends and Influence People”. A classic for self-development and everybody who wants to be liked and respected by people. Nevermind that it’s been written in 1936! It’s teachings are still of value. It has taught me to respect, listen to and give back to people in order to even have the nerve to expect admiration and love. How you are with them draws the image they associate with you in their minds. Please use warm and cheerful colors! The world has enough shades of gray (pun intended!)

Once again, Chase Jarvis makes his way onto my list of inspirational people! Beginning with CreativeLive and arriving at his new YouTube series called #cjRAW, this man’s creative journey has caught my attention for years now. Photography, chasing your own dream, the climb to finding your passion in life, constant learning and the importance of education are the points in which I find similarities. Is that enough? Hehe!

Adriene Mishler is a daily presence when I’m on the yoga mat. Her fun classes and insightful tips and tricks makes you feel and accept that your body can do more than the mind can think of doing. Once you understand that and focus on the breath and sensations in the body, Mrs Mishler’s mission is fullfilled. Find what feels good and you’ll find yourself.

The Ikonnians, like someone named them, have done it again! After being outrunned by Gary Vee, Tim Ferris and Chase last month, Mimi and Alex Ikonn were back in my daily playlist on YouTube this November! Business made easy, inspiration to pursue your ideas and dreams and to build a sustainable lifestyle while you enjoy every second of it.

Food Matters TV did a free broadcast of four of their most compelling movies about food, health and emotions. These are usually available to purchase on their website, but they decided to share incredible information with their followers, at no cost, but only benefits. “Origins”, “Hungry for Change” and “e-Motion” paint a thriller-ish picture of today’s food industry and food choices available in our supermarkets, plus hidden dangers in our homes and the trapped negative emotions in our bodies and minds. Wholeheartedly, the most insightful documentaries I have seen in a while now.

THANK YOU!

I am so grateful for all of you! For reading the blog, for retweeting, for liking on Facebook and on Instagram. For simply being there to listen. It is so important for me to stay in touch with you guys and make my message be heard. 2016 will be full of surprises! Stick around!

Monthly Learnings & Blog Statistics NOVEMBER 2015 #SMartWednesday

It’s time to see how November went in terms of lessons learned and blog stats. At the beginning of each month, I count the blessings and misfortunes of the previous one. Welcome to #SMartWednesday Monthly Learnings & Stats Edition! Keep reading to find out more.

EXPERIENCES & WHAT YOU SHOULD ALSO KNOW

In order to have the lifestyle you wish, you have to make the right and smart choices for you. Do what suits you best and what makes you happy. These are my choices for this month. I choose to share them as pieces of advice that you can adjust in your own lifestyle as needed.

  1. Declutter & simplify the way you live. Go through all your possesions by category and sort each one of them into three piles: keepers, donate, garbage. If you are emotionally attached to a certain item but you don’t use / look at it for weeks in a row, take a picture of it and let it go. For really important items, design a “Memory Box” and add them to it. Then put the box away so that it doesn’t take up your day to day space. Do one category at a time and don’t be pressured to finish. The calmer you are, the best choices you will be able to make.
  2. Let go of negative emotions. You can do this as often as you’d like. Start with once a month ad then go deeper, once a week to daily. All you have to do is to write down all the negative emotions you have felt in the last month, week, day. Have a column for the negative emotion and another one for its reason. Ask yourself why did you feel that, as many times as it takes to get to an answer that you feel it’s right for you. Then forgive those who have done you wrong, ask for forgiveness and most importantly, forgive yourself! Forgive and let go. It’s the most powerful thing you’ll ever experience.
  3. Find balance in life. All the elements in your day need to be aligned in order to help you train your body, mind and emotions to focus and produce better work by staying on schedule. With everything in balance, you don’t have to rethink how, why and when to do things every time you do them. It automates your daily schedule, your week, your month.
  4. Prioritise & simplify routines. If you don’t have established routines, work on building at least two: a morning and an evening one. Make them times of getting back to yourself. Begin and end the day with a clear and eased mind. It does wonder for your brain and way you approach things. Work on having a simple daily schedule and batch similar tasks together, as to save energy. Tweak it as many times as you need.
  5. Visualise your ideal lifestyle & note it all down on a piece of paper. Be as specific as you can be. When you are finished, grab a marker and go over the goals and plans you have in your description. Transcribe them on a separate paper and then work your way down this list, and assign plans and actions for each goal. Make weekly plans of action and daily tasks that will get you closer to your goals each day. Action is the key to all plans and goal setting. Do it!
  6. Go inwards & go deep. Allow yourself at least 10 minutes in the morning and 10 in the evening to really stay silent and think about what your intentions are and what your day has been like respectively. Analyze your motivations, reasons and decisions and write down the most important three things for that day. Three intentions in the morning and three woderful things that happened. You could go even deeper and write an entire page for each. The choice is yours.
  7. Learn to unwind & let go of control. The world doesn’t stop if you don’t control it. Stop. Breathe. Be calm. You’ve done your best for the day. Unwind. Take a hottish shower and do some light stretches, just enough to losen those tight muscles. Close all distractions or put them in a different room: phone, TV, computer. Change into something comfortable, pour a glass of red wine and put on some music, or read a book, or simply lay in bed with your eyes closed. Let go of all things around you and just be. Re-lax, my dears, relax!

SMART CHOICE STATS & SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT

This month I am upset. The Analytics part of my blog got screwed up by some annoying crawlers and spam links that scrambled the statistics I wanted to share with you.

Although the numer of unique visitors has gone up (546 - 70% new, 30% returning), the bounce rate was 93% (percent of leaving the site after a few seconds or just a few minutes) with an average of 32 seconds / session and of 2 pages / session.

Most of my referral traffic came from places like adf.ly (221 users), get-your-social-buttons.info (128 users), snip.to (51 users), site13545613.snip.to (25 users). It's pointless to get high on 500+ unique views when they have no value.

Social was the same as last month, the major traffic bringers were Facebook and Twitter. The most engaged social community was that on Instagram, with 42 new followers and 10+ comments. Twitter comes up second, with 11 new followers and 5+ retweets. Facebook was more layed back this month, with only three more likes.

Blog demographics changed for the better as this month: more than half of you guys were female, with ages between 25-34 (70.91%). The rest were from the upper age groups and / or male. The information on SMart Choice Lifestyle is specifically designed to fit the needs of this age group (female AND male), so I am happy about the outcome.

Most of you guys were from Northern America, Eastern Europe and Eastern Asia. The rest were from Western and Northern Europe, Australasia, South America, Southern Europe and Southeast Asia. Thank you Ontario, New York, Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Kiev, Beijing, Amsterdam, Brighton, Brisbane, for being interested in this lifestyle platform.

The top 5 most read articles in November (click to read each article):

LAST BUT NOT LEAST

I am so grateful for the opportunity to write weekly articles on SMart Choice. I am even more grateful to have people interested in what I have to say. My day is happy if I make only a single one of you guys make the smart choices that will change your life in a positive & healthy way.

Thank you for letting me be a part of your life this month also!

Quick Way to Reset Your Mind - Stop. Breathe. Be calm - #LifestyleFriday

Do you happen to feel that sensation like the walls are comming towards you, threatening to squish and nail you to the ground, feeling helpless? Do you feel that anxiety that slowly crawls in on you and makes you feel jumpy and irritable? Do you feel that on a daily basis and have lots of thoughts and things around you all the time? Things that seem to need your immediate attention and energy? Stop. Breathe. Be calm.

When you stop and breathe in order to become calm, the world around you doesn’t colapse like you think it will. In fact, the world doesn’t rely on you for anything. It doesn’t even care about you at all. You invest to much energy and thought into something that goes on existing just fine, with or without you. It has been doing that before you were born and it will continue doing that after you are no longer here. Stop. Breathe. Be calm.

If you are like me, you are so used to being efficient and afraid of letting time pass by without actually doing something in the hours that come and go. So used to be held accountable by someone for doing the right things, at the right time and in the right way, that you become that someone who is constantly pushing yourself to more and more effort, detail and strain.

This is not the kind of push that gets you further in life. It’s the kind that leaves you exhausted after a day’s work and realizing that you hadn’t had so much done after all. It leaves you with three quarters off your to do list untouched and feeling guilty about not being able to do it all. It tears down your self-esteem, your focus and your happines. Stop. Breathe. Be calm.

But there is another way to do things. There is a way that helps you rise your head out of the clutter.  A way that allows you to purge all that tension away and work at giving your best with the least amount of energy drainage possible. That method is simply alowing yourself to let go. Once you catch yourself being tense, stressed and anxious about the next deadline, task or about the new doctor’s appointment, allow yourself to pause and just be.

It might sound like woo-woo stuff, but is has been proven that psychologically and biologically, the mind and body need to unwind in order to function at their maximum capacity. You cannot have a relaxed mind if you clutter it with all kind of thoughts. You cannot have a relaxed body if you get tense in the neck or in your abdominal area. So, allow yourself to let go. Do it right now.

Sit back on wherever you’re sitting right now. Allow your legs to sit comfortably on the ground. Put your hands in your lap and close the eyes. Notice how you feel. Breathe in fully through your nose and breathe out also through the nose. Notice how that makes you feel. With your eyes still closed, let thoughts float around your head, but don’t create any plans around any of them. Just let them float. Breathe in. Breathe out. Feel your body beginning to relax and letting go of tension. Rotate your nose and form circles one way and then the other. Sit up tall, rotate your shoulders 2-3 times, take a deep breath through your nose and a deep exhale through your mouth (if you are at work, breathe slowly, you don’t wanna scare anyone! :)) ).

Open your eyes. How do you feel? Let me know in the comments below. Repeat for as long as it takes to make you feel comfortable (and as time alows it).

This was all for this week’s #LifestyleFriday! Thanks for being here and I'll see you next week!
