How to Keep Working While Living With Multiple Sclerosis - #SMartWednesday

Last year I was telling you about my plans of starting a business while living with MS. Today I’m going further on, and begin talking about how I think of making it a reality. I hope sharing my story can inspire you to do great work yourself.

The first thing I learned in my journey so far, is that you need to focus on your strenghts, on what you can and love doing. All the rest is weighing you down from achieving your goals, be them career or personal ones. We are all good at something, or do some things especially well. Think about what you love doing and what are you really good at, what do people always compliment you on.

Money and financial security keep you healthy and basically alive, as they provide for all that helps you going on living from month to month. But on the long run, are they really worth your health, mental clarity and emotions?

Adjust your current conditions at work. Talk to your employer about what your needs are and what can you both do to continue having a productive and healthy collaboration. If all this fails, go back to your main resource: yourself.

Invest time into searching for a new job or take a leap of faith and start your own thing. Read here some of the conclusions of the twittchat #WorkOutMS that I was on last year, organised by shift.ms and the European Multiple Sclerosis Platform. You'll find it useful.

By age 25-30 you are certainly very good at something. Think how you can transform that into a product or service and start your own business. But start small and gradually go upwards. It’s going to be hard at times, but think that the alternative can be having no job at all, and not being able to contribute to your family’s income. You have MS. Can starting a business scare you more?

Of course, there are also the cases when you can’t move, or have a mobility issue. As long as you can write, speak and express yourself, you can do it. There are tens of examples of people with major disabilities who have made it through and established a name for themselves. Prove society wrong! You are a perfectly gifted individual, who has a lot to offer to the world. Be that only your MS experience. Write about it, turn it into a workshop… You know best what you’re good at.

For me, I decided last year to focus on my writing skills, on portrait photography and on developing my yoga practice. The business I’m starting is all about visual storytelling and family portrait photography. Starting this while I dedicate the rest of my time to writing and developing my yoga practice (planning to become an instructor someday).

This is one of many articles to come regarding work issues and how to start and manage a business while living with multiple sclerosis. It’s a broad subject and a passionate one for me, as I always was an independent spirit who loved to do things my own way, and help people along the way. You will be seeing more of this topic! Hope you like it!

December 2015 - Monthly Learnings & Analytics - #SMartWednesday

Hello there, you! Happy 2016! We begin this year’s posts with a review of what happened in December. It’s better to sum up and count blessings at the end of each year, so this is what we’re gonna do this week at SMart Choice. Let’s begin!

For more structure, I decided to organize the things I want to share with you into three main categories: mind, body and spirit, followed by a short review of the blog and social analytics.

MIND

When the voice in your head is constantly rambling, you can’t do anything right. You tend to be unproductive and feel overly-stressed. What has worked for me and hopefully it will help you too, is allowing myself to let go of whatever was going on inside my mind and unplugg.

Make time for 10 minutes each morning and each evening to simply sit in silence, with your eyes closed, praying, meditating or simply being aware of the present moment. Allow your thoughts to come in, but let them go without making any stories around them. Stop. Breathe. Be calm.

BODY

Making lifestyle changes is like running a marathon. You have to keep up with your training and performance in order to achieve consistant results. The end goal is to be healthy and in shape. The reward you get for doing those healthy choices is the good life you’ll be able to live.

Focus on the race, not on the end goal. Keep away from distractions both culinary and “to tired to exercise” occasions like Christmas, New Years, etc. Taking the easy way out may be good for you now, but in the long run, you’d wish those exceptions never took place.

SPIRIT

All the troubles we face are because we don’t know ourselves from the inside-out. We don’t know who we really are, what are wants and goals are and so we miss the point. Always looking at others, thinking about our past or planning our future, we miss the present moment and who we really are.

Make time for yourself. Start a daily journal and write down three amazing things that happened to you that day. Write about your emotions, plans and wants. Review it weekly and see how you really are and what you stand for.

ANALYTICS

December was a full month for everybody and so there were fewer visits to the blog, but more engagement on Instagram & Twitter. That made me understand that people prefered shorter and more easily digestable content. We could all need more time nowadays so, by making content more concise and of more value, people dropped in to say hi.

As engagement and bringing traffic to the blog go, Instagram and Twitter were on first place, followed by Facebook and Google Plus. The majority of the audience came from USA, Russia and Romania, followed by China, Spain and the United Kingdom.

Thank you so much for making this thing possible!

This was all for this week’s #SMartWednesday! Thanks for being here!

How to Make Smart Choices? - #SMartWednesday

We all heard about SMART goals. They have to be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound. Been there, done that. But how does a choice look like under the same lens and how does it influence your life? Find out below.

WHAT IS A CHOICE?

A choice is the action of mentally making a decision. The moment when you are faced with options and need to assume just one. There are good choices, there are bad choices. But all you do in your life is choose. You  are your parents’ choice of having children. Think about that.

All that you’ve chosen until now has shaped you in one form or the other. All your daily habits are the consequence of choosing. Success, health and even your dream lifestyle begin with what you choose to do daily. In your morning rituals, in your to do list, in managing your priorities.

CHOOSE YOUR DREAM LIFESTYLE

Think about what you want in life. Mentally draw your ideal lifestyle. Be specific. Give details. Sketch it out on paper. What goals do you have? What do you aim for? List ready? Next, think about what choices you need to make daily in order to get you closer to fulfilling them.

Once you got those noted down, do the work! As Tim Ferriss says, “dreamline” your ideal lifestyle. Meaning that you need to put all of your choices on a timeline, in a time frame that allows you to work consistently and productively to achieve your goals.

Make sure to work in little, attainable steps. This helps you not to get discouraged on the long run. Set tight deadlines and measure your progress as you get to each target. See what choices have worked, what choices need to be done from now on, see what choices weren’t so smart after all.

The most important tip I can give you is to mind your emotions. Be aware of the state of mind you are in when making a choice. In general, positive mindsets generate good ideas, and negative mindsets generate bad ones. Think about moments when you are angry and say something that you later regret. That was a bad choice.

The trick is to do all the things needed to attain a positive state of mind, to be happy and calm in order to be able to focus on choosing well, on choosing smart. That’s what SMart Choice Lifestyle is all about! I’m here to guide your way into making the right choices for you. The choices that are in allignment with who you are as a person, and with what you want to do with your life.

In order to gain a positive mindset you have to change the way you see the world. Transform the way you think of yourself and your life. All change is triggered by something that happened, is happening or will happen in your life.

The catch is to learn how to accept, adapt and finally overcome whatever negative things you have in your life right now. Be it stress, anxiety, disability, fear, anger, being overweight, depressed, etc. The biggest change comes from within and goes from the inside-out.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

There are three layers we need to peal in order to start acting our choices: body, mind and emotion. Join me tomorrow as we start working on how to declutter and simplify our bodies from the inside out.

Question of the day: How did choices influenced your life so far? Tell me all about it in the comments below.

Monthly Learnings & Blog Statistics NOVEMBER 2015 #SMartWednesday

It’s time to see how November went in terms of lessons learned and blog stats. At the beginning of each month, I count the blessings and misfortunes of the previous one. Welcome to #SMartWednesday Monthly Learnings & Stats Edition! Keep reading to find out more.

EXPERIENCES & WHAT YOU SHOULD ALSO KNOW

In order to have the lifestyle you wish, you have to make the right and smart choices for you. Do what suits you best and what makes you happy. These are my choices for this month. I choose to share them as pieces of advice that you can adjust in your own lifestyle as needed.

  1. Declutter & simplify the way you live. Go through all your possesions by category and sort each one of them into three piles: keepers, donate, garbage. If you are emotionally attached to a certain item but you don’t use / look at it for weeks in a row, take a picture of it and let it go. For really important items, design a “Memory Box” and add them to it. Then put the box away so that it doesn’t take up your day to day space. Do one category at a time and don’t be pressured to finish. The calmer you are, the best choices you will be able to make.
  2. Let go of negative emotions. You can do this as often as you’d like. Start with once a month ad then go deeper, once a week to daily. All you have to do is to write down all the negative emotions you have felt in the last month, week, day. Have a column for the negative emotion and another one for its reason. Ask yourself why did you feel that, as many times as it takes to get to an answer that you feel it’s right for you. Then forgive those who have done you wrong, ask for forgiveness and most importantly, forgive yourself! Forgive and let go. It’s the most powerful thing you’ll ever experience.
  3. Find balance in life. All the elements in your day need to be aligned in order to help you train your body, mind and emotions to focus and produce better work by staying on schedule. With everything in balance, you don’t have to rethink how, why and when to do things every time you do them. It automates your daily schedule, your week, your month.
  4. Prioritise & simplify routines. If you don’t have established routines, work on building at least two: a morning and an evening one. Make them times of getting back to yourself. Begin and end the day with a clear and eased mind. It does wonder for your brain and way you approach things. Work on having a simple daily schedule and batch similar tasks together, as to save energy. Tweak it as many times as you need.
  5. Visualise your ideal lifestyle & note it all down on a piece of paper. Be as specific as you can be. When you are finished, grab a marker and go over the goals and plans you have in your description. Transcribe them on a separate paper and then work your way down this list, and assign plans and actions for each goal. Make weekly plans of action and daily tasks that will get you closer to your goals each day. Action is the key to all plans and goal setting. Do it!
  6. Go inwards & go deep. Allow yourself at least 10 minutes in the morning and 10 in the evening to really stay silent and think about what your intentions are and what your day has been like respectively. Analyze your motivations, reasons and decisions and write down the most important three things for that day. Three intentions in the morning and three woderful things that happened. You could go even deeper and write an entire page for each. The choice is yours.
  7. Learn to unwind & let go of control. The world doesn’t stop if you don’t control it. Stop. Breathe. Be calm. You’ve done your best for the day. Unwind. Take a hottish shower and do some light stretches, just enough to losen those tight muscles. Close all distractions or put them in a different room: phone, TV, computer. Change into something comfortable, pour a glass of red wine and put on some music, or read a book, or simply lay in bed with your eyes closed. Let go of all things around you and just be. Re-lax, my dears, relax!

SMART CHOICE STATS & SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT

This month I am upset. The Analytics part of my blog got screwed up by some annoying crawlers and spam links that scrambled the statistics I wanted to share with you.

Although the numer of unique visitors has gone up (546 - 70% new, 30% returning), the bounce rate was 93% (percent of leaving the site after a few seconds or just a few minutes) with an average of 32 seconds / session and of 2 pages / session.

Most of my referral traffic came from places like adf.ly (221 users), get-your-social-buttons.info (128 users), snip.to (51 users), site13545613.snip.to (25 users). It's pointless to get high on 500+ unique views when they have no value.

Social was the same as last month, the major traffic bringers were Facebook and Twitter. The most engaged social community was that on Instagram, with 42 new followers and 10+ comments. Twitter comes up second, with 11 new followers and 5+ retweets. Facebook was more layed back this month, with only three more likes.

Blog demographics changed for the better as this month: more than half of you guys were female, with ages between 25-34 (70.91%). The rest were from the upper age groups and / or male. The information on SMart Choice Lifestyle is specifically designed to fit the needs of this age group (female AND male), so I am happy about the outcome.

Most of you guys were from Northern America, Eastern Europe and Eastern Asia. The rest were from Western and Northern Europe, Australasia, South America, Southern Europe and Southeast Asia. Thank you Ontario, New York, Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Kiev, Beijing, Amsterdam, Brighton, Brisbane, for being interested in this lifestyle platform.

The top 5 most read articles in November (click to read each article):

LAST BUT NOT LEAST

I am so grateful for the opportunity to write weekly articles on SMart Choice. I am even more grateful to have people interested in what I have to say. My day is happy if I make only a single one of you guys make the smart choices that will change your life in a positive & healthy way.

Thank you for letting me be a part of your life this month also!

Deliciously Toxic! Why You Become Addicted & Sick from Today's Food - #SMartWednesday

This week on #SMartWednesday we do a short analisys of addiction and how you can better cope with it in today’s fast pacing world. Make the smart choice and read all about it in the article below.

WHAT IS ADDICTION & HOW DOES IT WORK?

The compulsive use of a substance or activity that provides pleasure, interfering with your day to day activities such as work, relatioships or health. There are mainly two types of addiction:

1. behavioral - compulsive use of natural rewards such as food, exercise or sex;
2. drug-related - compulsive use of chemicals that influence your brain connections.

It works by increasing the concentration of synaptic dopamine (happiness hormone and neurotransmitter) in the brain, thus giving you a rush everytime you use the behavior or substance. Your brain gets a reward each time and that feeling is highly addictive.

Sometimes, you are not aware that you have an addiction to something until someone points that out to you. This is one of those cases.

If I started by telling you cocaine and heroin cause addiction, that would be totally redundant and a waste of time. Telling you that most food you eat today makes you addicted and sick, will most likely catch your attention.

WHY DO YOU GET ADDICTED TO FOOD & WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT?

Modern society is proudly displaying the advances of technology and the way we are now able to make more food and have supermarkets full of ready-to-eat products, perfect for our fast-forward lifestyle and Earth’s growing population.

These products are highly processed foods with loads of added fat and refined carbs known to influence addictive behavior when they are consumed in high ammounts. Fat is a taste and flavour enhancer, thus making you unable to resist the taste and goodness of food. Refined carbs, once ingested, quickly metabolize into sugars (glucose) that spike your insulin levels only to drop them even faster, and make you crave more of that product.

You eat those products because they help release stress and make you feel good instead. The reward (feeling better) is greater than the negative outcome (you get fat). Conditioning the brain to release dopamine and make you happy after eating certain foods, makes you addicted. The brain identifies them as a pleasure-generating stimuli and you’re hooked!

Sugar and fat rarely occur in the same food naturally. Think grapes. They contain sugar (fructose) but zero fats. Nuts are full of fats, but have no sugar whatsoever. Processed foods have been genetically engineered to have high amounts of both (ex: pizza, chocolate, cake). The taste is amazing and so rewarding. You get addicted without even knowing it.

In drug addictions, a concentrated dose of a substance increases its abuse. It’s absorbed faster into the bloodstream, thus the rush is much quicker. The same with highly processed foods. It’s packed with chemically produced sugar, carbs and fat, that are many times more concentrated than the ones you find in nature (raw, organic foods).

The link between high glucose levels and addiction areas in the brain makes you crave food just for pleasure. The nutritional value is gone, and you feed yourself only chemicals that pose as delicious food. Deliciously toxic, that is. And addictive.

Any foreign substance that enters the body is facing an attack from the immune system. It fights to protect the body from anything alien. Any attack results in inflammation. Any inflammation could be the result of a chronic illness or acute discomfort. Are you willing to take that risk just for that yummy pizza?

Here’s what to do.

MAKE SMART CHOICES, IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH

I know it’s very hard to make healthy choices when you are bombarded with food-porn images and videos all over the internet, on social media, advertising and cooking shows. It’s hard. Damn hard.

But you know what’s even harder? Living with a chronic disease generated by chemical food and a chaotic lifestyle. It’s all about the choices you make.

Researchers at the University of Michigan have identified the highest addictive foods, the majority of which are highly processed. The top 10 items are also the most pleasurable ones for many people living today.

  1. Pizza (gluten, dairy, sugar in tomato paste)
  2. Chocolate (fat, sugar, dairy)
  3. Chips (fat, sugar from the amidon found in the potatoes)
  4. Cookie (gluten, sugar, dairy)
  5. Ice cream (dairy, sugar)
  6. French fries (fat, sugar from the amidon found in the potatoes)
  7. Cheeseburger (gluten, sugar, dairy)
  8. Soda (not diet) (sugar from corn syrup)
  9. Cake (gluten, sugar, dairy)
  10. Cheese (dairy - lactose and casein)

I’ve said it and I’ll repeat it untill it sticks: quit sugar, gluten and dairy alltogether. In today’s world, if you are not sure where your food is comming from, you should practice caution and not eat it.

The chemical formulas of these three foods are very similar to those of cocaine or heroin. You wouldn’t want to be on the road of no return with one of these two drugs, would you? Then why do it with sugar, gluten and dairy? Only because they taste good and are heavily marketed in our consummerist society? Think about it!

All food that comes from a cartboard or foil packaging is not good for you. I don’t care how pretty it is, I don’t care how tasty it is, I don’t care how much you like it! I have been there for most of my life and what does that helped me with? Only with enhancing the probable predisposition I had for developing multiple sclerosis.

OK, agree! It is only a probability. But are you willing to live with the doubt all your life? Feeling sluggish, cranky and getting fat? With a hammer dangling above your head, posibly favoring chronic illness? I thought you wouldn’t! Neither have I. As much as I loved (not liked, LOVED!) soda, pizza, cheese, chocolate and icecream, they made me sick.

How do I know that? I spent days without any sugar, gluten or dairy. I began feeling better. Then I did test meals. Surprise, surprise! Guess who got bloated, cranky and sluggish? Guess who had more symptoms and malaise? That’s right! ME!

Think about it. We have been used to eat this way since we were little. For the past 20 years, the food industry has boomed with loads of products that only mimic real food. Our taste buds have grown accustomed to them. But are they feeding us the nutrients we need to live in a healthy body and enjoy a long life? No.

That’s why it's all about choices! You have the power to decide which food goes into your mouth and which stays on the shelf.

Join me tomorrow on #HealthyThursday to find out what are the best choices and hacks for healthy eating (with or without a chronic illness like multiple sclerosis).

This was all for this week’s #SMartWednesday! Thanks for being here!

How to Ease Future Multiple Sclerosis Flares with 7 Healthy Habits - #SMartWednesday

Hi there and welcome to a new episode of the #SMartWednesday weekly series here on SMart Choice Lifestyle! Today I want to talk to you about the importance of creating new healthy habits and action-plans in order to lessen the impact of a possible multiple sclerosis flare.

PREVENTION IS KEY

I think we all agree on the fact that the better the management of this illness, the better the outcome or at least our coping mechanism, be it physical or emotional. You need to have a healthy lifestyle, as healthy as your own condition will alow you. I encourage you to personalize the way you do this, as it needs to come naturally and feel comfortable to you in your daily life. Less stress, less trouble.

You and I both know that is better to prevent than treat. And if we were not able to prevent multiple sclerosis, we might as well prevent or ease its effects on our lives. You wouldn’t like a relapse to catch you unprepared, would you? It generates enough trouble by itself. Thinking that “it’s never gonna happen to me!” and “I will never get through this!” are both unproductive and damaging ways of thinking.

Start by having an action plan. Think what needs to be done in case a relapse might happen. Take into consideration all the details that might need attention into your life. For example, if you are employed, have a colleague you can call and ask to help by taking over some of your tasks untill you get better. Or maybe you are a mom and you have a support system in place, like asking a friend or a member of your family to help you with all that needs to be done.

Either way, planning beats the go-with-the-flow attitude. It gets rid of the fear or the angst you might have, it clearly states what, when, how and by whom needs to be done. I will have a more in depth article about this topic in a future #SMartWednesday episode.

MY EXPERIENCE & WHAT I'VE DONE

My personal experience with the fear of relapses is sometimes still an issue, but it’s gotten less and less scary because I simply faced it, looked it into the eye and wrote down an action-plan.

One evening I was writing in my MS Journal about the fears and anxieties I had that day. As I had some tingling and numbness down my left arm and some eye blurriness, the first thing I thought about was “fear of relapse”. I looked at what I have been writing for the past month or so, and the same fear kept repeating at different intervals, depending on my symptoms.

I was scared sh****s of a possible relapse. Mind you that I have changed my lifestyle to a healthy way of living, but the fear of the unknown was still there and reactivated with each and every little symptom I might have experienced. Stressing multiple sclerosis!

And so I took charge. I got up, went to the bathroom, looked into the mirror and asked myself what made me so afraid. Was it the relapse itself? No, because I had no power over it. Was it a certain type of relapse? No, because I can’t decide that. What kept me anxious was not knowing what to do next and not having control. Although I basically knew what it needed to do, I did not have an action plan. I did not have a strategy in place for my war with multiple sclerosis.

In today's article I will give you guys the essential insights I had that evening. I will make a separate article on the topic, as it needs more attention than I can give it here.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW AND DO

Note down all the people you need to call in case a relapse might happen. That includes your neurologist, your MS nurse or GP. Be informed on who you can call, when and what for. Be prepared to ask the right questions and be prepared for streroids and/or taking days off for rest.

Know that the relapse WILL end. Your life will get back to normal or to your new normals if that’s the case. You may be left with new symptoms or issues, but you will overcome each challenge as it occurs. No need in stressing about that now.

Allow your body to heal. Have patience and take care of yourself. Drink plenty of fluids, rest and basically take it easy for some time, untill you stabilize and begin recovery. Once you start that, focus on getting your strength, balance, flexibility and coordination back, as much as you can. Focus on healing and getting stronger.

7 HEALTHY HABITS TO EASE FUTURE RELAPSES

Further on, let’s get into the 7 points I constructed this article around. Their common ground is improving the quality of life and making you stronger in order to cope better with… whatever!

  1. EXERCISE - it keeps you flexible, balanced and strong, plus it helps the nervous system rewire faster after a flare. The body overall has a better shape and tonus.
  2. EAT HEALTHY - clean up your diet of any food allergens (check what you are allergic to, but mostly, avoid gluten, dairy and processed sugar as much as possible, as they increase the imflammatory state in your body). As a general rule: eat lots of fiber (more vegetables than fruit) and less fat (focus on healthy fats: avocado, olive oil, flax seeds, coconut oil). All food must be eaten in moderation and only until you begin to feel full.
  3. REDUCE STRESS - as a major MS antagonist, it has to go, and it has to go fast. Of course, in our modern lifestyles getting rid of it is pretty tricky, but not impossible. Relaxation techniques (ex: meditation) and deep breathing can have a positive effect on your wellbeing. Also, declutter your mind by starting a journal and venting all issues.
  4. TAKE VITAMIN D3 - it helps your immune system stay healthy and on the right track. The best form is the natural one, as it’s easily processed for the body, but as MSers have notably low levels, a supplement would be advisable. You can find it in salmon, eggs and sardines. Have your levels checked and see how much you need to supplement, as to not overdrive the body uselessly and get to the healthy amount needed.
  5. STAY MENTALLY ACTIVE - keep your mind occupied. Take notice that I said occupied not busy. Putting strain on it is like adding stress uselessly. Make puzzles, read, write, watch an interesting documentary, download a brain training app. Whatever is comfortable and that you enjoy doing.
  6. GET QUALITY SLEEP - get to bed at the same hour each night. Have a bedtime routine where you unwind, relax and leave all the day behind. Include whatever makes you feel at ease and comfortable. Keep it simple, light and stress free. Take time in preparing for sleep. It has to relax you, not aggitate you.
  7. TAKE MEDICATION AS DIRECTED - whether you are on DMDs, symptomatic treatments or on no treatment at all, take good care of your health and adress any issue immediately. Resolve any infection, cold or other problem as quickly and as better as you can, in order to avoid further damage or a nasty relapse.

Last, but not least, here’s an extra tip that you can easily add to your day: be gentle with yourself. Take it easy and gradually let go of worries. Focus on what you enjoy doing and what your abilities still help you with. Grow on those and find ease in whatever you do all day.

Make small choices, decide on what’s best for you at your own pace. Don’t procrastirnate but instead have an action plan ready, have a schedule and goals you want to achieve. Stick to that plan and make modifications as needed. Only you can make yourself better. If you don’t help yourself be, feel, act better, no one will. Take responsability for your life and plan wisely.

To sum it up, you need to take charge of your wellbeing and make the right choices that best fit your lifestyle. You want to get healthy, strong and relax your mind in order to better cope with an eventual relapse. Have an action plan devised especially for this matter and most of all: TAKE IT EASY, SMILE and LIVE YOUR LIFE TO THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITIES.

This was all for this week’s #SMartWednesday! Thanks for being here!

What’s your action-plan going to be like? I am here to help you craft it. Tell me all about it by writing a comment in the box below. I would love to hear your story and help you in any way.
